Bullying – still a concern

Bullying continues to become a major concern in today’s society. Physical as well as online (cyber) bullying has had huge negative impacts. The article ‘Are anti-bullying efforts making it worse?’ stated that a '12 year old commits suicide after months of online torment’ (CBS News). This shows how serious bullying result to. Due to the boom of social network on the Internet, students are not only getting bullied at school but also when they are at home. When students are not feeling safe and comfortable at their own homes, its a big issue!!

Bullying is becoming too common – everyone is likely to experience bullying, whether if it is major or minor. According to the National Centre for Education Statistics, almost one third of students aged 12 -18 reported having bullied at school in 2007. Numbers are more likely to be higher as students don't like to disclose that they have been bullied.

Many counsellors and teachers state that many people are bullies because they are victim of being bullied themselves. "Bullies are not the cause of the problem. They're the result of the problem. The problem is in the climate of the school," Twemlow said (CBS News).

Cyberbullying is on the rise more than any other type of bulling. Prevention programs such as the Kids Helpline and school campaigns. Nevertheless, what is the best way to defeat bullying is still questionable. Often, when raising awareness about bullying, there is a huge focus on services available to help people who suffer from bullying. There needs to be a focus on the impacts of bullying as well, that way students may understand the consequences if they continue to bully.
Going to school for 12 years has taught me that kids can be really cruel. Although they may be under the age of 10 (doli incapax) and aren’t capable of making informed decisions, they may still impact one’s death. Something needs to happen to give justice to the victims. It’s not fair. If bullying is intentional, I believe there should be a much more severe consequence. The bully should hold responsibility for their action. A great way to resolve this could be through attending a youth justice conference could be held so that both the victim and the bully can share their sides of the story.
